Del Mar, California is ideally positioned at the southernmost tip of North County San Diego. It sits along the Pacific Ocean close to La Jolla to the south and near coastal beach cities to the north such as Solana Beach and Cardiff-By-The-Sea. It is also just a short trip east to high end country clubs and golf courses in Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe to the east. Del Mar has a great mix of luxury shopping, salons, clothing boutiques, unique antique and gift shops along with up-scale restaurants providing patio dining as you enjoy amazing views of the sunset. If you are looking to dine as close to the sand as possible make sure to visit beachfront favorites The Poseidon and Jake's Del Mar. The Poseidon has long been a family favorite of ours with their outdoor dining area that sits along the beach. It is one of the few true beachfront seating options in North County and has created many memorable dinners and family fun for us over the years. The bar is always jumping around happy hour to locals and tourists looking to meet up with or make new friends while catching an epic North County San Diego sunset.
The Del Mar Fairgrounds is home for the annual San Diego / Del Mar fair. This is a lively place during the summer months starting early June and running through the 4th of July. Livestock, exhibits, carnival rides, concerts and more bring thousands of visitors to North County each year for fun times for the entire family. Big name music and comedy acts take to the stage each night on the turf of the Del Mar racetrack playing to enthusiastic fans that pack the grandstands. The fair has become an annual outing for our family and friends. The kids spend an hour or more doing the rides. Then we head over to the Paddock green to find a table near 17 Hands to feast on fair food, listen to music and let the kids play and hunt for souvenirs. If you a sweet tooth like I do, make sure you track down a maple bacon donut. It sounds terrible.. but may be the most delicious indulgent treat on the planet.
When the San Diego Fair ends the Del Mar horse racing begins! Starting in mid-July and running through early September the Del Mar race season is a must visit for horse lovers, thrill seekers and anyone looking for a great day out at one of the most picturesque tracks in the world. What's not to like about watching thoroughbreds while overlooking the Pacific Ocean? My daughter who is a horse fanatic loves to head down to the Paddock prior to each race to get a close up look at these equine athletes and the jockeys who race them. The Del Mar racetrack has been a staple of North County since the 1930's and is home for history, tradition and all the horse racing pageantry that you could ever hope for. This should be an annual must do for any Southern Californian.
